Recreation and services in surroundings
The town of Prachatice belongs to the best preserved urban complexes in the Czech Republic.
North of České Budějovice is located the magnificent Hluboká nad Vltavou Château, which was constructed in the place of a former Gothic castle. This most significant Neo-Gothic building in the Czech Republic was inspired by Windsor Royal Castle, England.
The town of Třeboň, located approximately in the middle of the way from České Budějovice to Jindřichův Hradec, in the Třeboňská Basin flatlands, is the centre of the Třeboň District Protected Landscape Area and Biosphere Reservation.
One of the historic attractions of Prachatice is the Golden Route, which crossed Prachatice in the Middle Ages. Hikers and bikers can use a network of trails going through the surrounding forests, which conveniently serve also as cross-country skiing trails in winter months. Beginner downhill skiers will find ideal conditions on the slopes of Libín Hill, which dominates the town of Prachatice. Those who are more demanding are invited to the Zadov downhill ski centre. A skating arena is available in Vimperk.
Šumava Mountains Region - The most visited part of the Šumava Mountains, the National Park includes an area of vast coniferous and mixed forests, a large number of naturally and historically unique moors, lakes of glacial origin, and valley meadows abundant in flora and fauna. The best way to get to know the Šumava Mountains is hiking but Šumava is perfect for biking, horseback-riding, or cross-country skiing, too. The most popular tourism centres include Hojsova Stráž, Srní, Špičák, Javorná, Kvilda, Churáňov, and Lipno Lake. There is a chair-lift service to several peaks (Pancíř, Špičák, Churáňov).
